National Geodetic Survey Officiates at Dedication of Historic Bilby Tower in Osgood, Indiana

In 1926, an inventive surveyor named Jasper S. Bilby, chief signalman of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (an NGS predecessor agency), designed the nation's first galvanized steel surveying towers. Bilby Towers bolted together easily and could be quickly dismantled for use at the next survey site. The last remaining Bilby Tower was recently reconstructed for permanent display in Jasper Bilby's hometown of Osgood, Indiana. On June 14, NGS officiated at a dedication ceremony.
